Many interesting lesbian and gay films at Sundance festival

by Jerry Semas

This year's Sundance Film Festival is featuring some noteworthy motion pictures. Some of the films making their U.S. premiere include An Awfully Big Adventure starring Hugh Grant as an acerbic gay theatre director; Greg Araki's The Doom Generation; and Wigstock, a documentary about New York's annual drag festival. Other documentaries in competition include Ballot Measure 9, about the battle against Oregon's first anti-gay initiative in 1992; A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde, a portrait of the African-American lesbian poet; Unzipped, Kevin Keeve's look at the world of fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi; and Maria Maggenti's lesbian romance The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love.

Lauren Lloyd, a vice president of production at Disney's Hollywood Pictures division, has gotten the green lights for two films with lesbian themes; a topic near and dear to her heart. One is called Chicks In White

Satin, and is a full-length screenplay written by Elaine Holliman at Lloyd's request, after the executive saw Holliman's lesbian wedding documentary of the same title at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. The other project is Story of Her Life, which was written by Ilene Chaikin. Lloyd is confident of the success potential of both films, saying they fit her criteria of including romance, comedy and strong story elements apart from, but not excluding lesbian issues.

German audiences are flocking to see a movie called Der Bewegte Mann. The title translates as "The Bisexual Man" and is taken from the cult gay comic book by German humorist Rolf Konig. The live-action comedy, directed by Sonke Wortmann, is a major hit as a result of its sexual satire aimed toward both gay and straight audiences. Watch for a likely U.S. distribution by next fall.

Victor/Victoria, a stage musical about an opera singer who pretends to be a man performing in drag to further her career, was scheduled to begin a four-week tryout at

Boston's Colonial Theatre beginning February 6 and move on to Broadway previews starting March 31, but has been postponed once more. The latest word had lead roles filled by Julie Andrews, Robert Loggia, Michael Nouri and Rachel York. The producers are Blake Edwards and Tony Adams, who also produced the 1982 movie the show is based on-which in turn was based on a 1933 German film. Rumors have been circulating that one of the show's songs plays right into gay stereotypes, without being amusing, and may offend many gay audience members. The new opening date is said to be next fall.

Director A. Hans Scheirl calls his new film Dandy Dust a lesbian John Waters film, while others refer to the picture as a cyberdyke thriller. An interesting title for a film without Sharon Stone or Brigitte Nielsen. Scheirl is known for having directed the esoteric lesbian movie Flaming Ears.

Paris Is Burning director Jennie Livingston has teamed with producer and

distributor Marcus Hu (Frisk) to develop a lesbian sex comedy titled You're The Top. Moving more into the mainstream, Hu will also co-produce Alison Maclean's Bedlam The script was written by John Sayles with Martin Scorsese on board as executive producer. The movie is based on the Boris Karloff film of the same name from the 1940s.

Our friends overseas at the British Broadcasting Corporation have started production on Stonewall, the story of six gay men in the early days leading up to the 1969 Stonewall riots. The project is intended for a U.S. theat rical release some time in the summer of 1995, In Entertainment Weekly's recent 1994 Review edition, celebrities were asked to give their choices for the Hits and the Pits of the Year. Michael Douglas chose Priscilla, Queen of the Desert as a hit and said "I loved it, it was such a sweet picture." Drag veteran Tony Curtis chose Interview with the Vampire as a hit and said, "It gave a lot of people the opportunity to see what it was like to see two men lusting after each other."
